Come Join Us for a Time of Ultimate Competition and Great Fellowship. Location: To Be Determined Time: 9:00 am Saturday, April 21st, 2012 Cost: $40.00 per team of 7 to 9
This is an all day event open to all area battalions. Each team must have at least seven players and no more than two registered substitutes. The competition is open to boys ages 12-18 and leaders. Each team may have no more than two competing leaders (over age18) counting substitutes.
The layout will be a double elimination tournament with two games being played at the same time on two separate fields as near to regulation size as possible.
Each game will consist of two 15-minute halves of stopped time. If there is a tie at the end of regulation play a sudden death tiebreaker will ensue with possession being decided by coin toss.
We will be using Official 175-gram "Diskcraft Ultrastar Disks" These disks can be found many different places for around 8 dollars. Each team will need to wear shirts of the same type and color to facilitate efficient game play. Cleats are permitted but no exposed metal spikes will be allowed.
There may be multiple teams from the same church; each team will register under separate team names. All teams must pay the registration fee. Players will not be permitted to substitute between teams. For a more complete listing of rules please see the UPA's "Official Rules of Ultimate 11th Edition". The rules listed here will take precedence over those of the UPA in case of conflict.
Additional Rules and Comments: For this tournament we will not be employing the "brick rule" (see section VIII "Starting and Restarting Play" in the UPA's Rules). The rules in the UPA's "Official Rules of Ultimate 11th Edition" are generally more complicated and in depth then we should need for our event. The following are ten basic rules that should be enough for most situations:
The Field — A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with endzones 25 yards deep. Initiate Play - Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.
Scoring — Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
Movement of the Disc — The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. One Stall... Two Stall... Three Stall... Etc.
Change of Possession — When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
Substitutions — Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
Non-Contact — No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
Fouls — When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
Self-Refereeing — Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
Spirit of the Game — Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
The "Spirit of The Game" should be the utmost priority during this competition. We will have a referee and observers watching each game but Ultimate - not to mention our Christian faith - is founded upon integrity and good sportsmanship. Actions such as calling your own fouls and setting aside your own best interest for others are key.
